Why tape up Subaru? Because race car!
18 February 2012: Badlands SCCA ice rallycross (Devils Lake, ND)
Well, on Saturday I attended my first-ever rally-x event, held by the Badlands Region SCCA on the frozen waters of Devils Lake, ND. Accompanying me on this road trip was my wife Sami and our friend (another Badlands racer), Garrett. Sami and Garrett rode with me on a few runs and manned the cameras throughout the day, and did a fantastic job of it. We had a beautiful day for racing; clear skies, amenable temperatures, and ice almost 2-ft thick. Subarus from multiple generations were there to represent. Having not seen my friends in the Badlands Region since September (the ones not from Bismarck anyway), it was great to catch up with them, and meet some new friends along the way! IWSTI members G4Disco and Ghostwhite were both in attendance, and a great time was had by all!
Normally, for an auto-x event, I'd give a layout of the course. However, with this rally-x, it's a little more difficult to do, so you'll have to do your best to gather it from the video.
I ran the car in non-studded tire class, on Michelin X-Ice studless tires borrowed from a friend in Bismarck. These...tires...are...epic! On the smooth, glossy ice, I had zero grip, but the second I hit any kind of snow cover, I felt in control of the vehicle and able to put it where I wanted it to go. At the end of the day, I took 1st place in non-studded tire class, and some of my times were faster than some times laid down in the studded tire class.
With no further adieu, some pictures! Also, I'm done fooling around with pictures trying to get them sized right for the forums and losing detail. So, increase your resolution or don't look at them.

After the rallycross event came to an end, Garrett, my wife and I headed to Garrison, ND, for a town dinner of roast beef, Swedish meatballs, and more. After the delicious food, we headed out to stop by my wife's parents' farm, where we ran into another first-ever for me: the northern lights. The auroroa borealis was out in force on Saturday night over Garrison, ND...and after 45 minutes of work with my DSLR and experimenting with exposure length, ISO and aperture settings, we managed to put together this 10-second time-lapse video of the aurora:

I also did a little bit of other experimentation with exposure times...
So that wraps that up! The car goes into Kupper Subaru for the 5x114.3 hub swap on Monday, and I'm getting excited for the changes to happen and to start getting ready for the coming racing season.
And what do we have here?
Stay tuned for more.
