What do you mean Cobb told you the map is "locked"? What the hell does that even mean?!

It means that you can't edit the map yourself. Cobb only has the rights or access to it.
So, say that I want to do a turbo upgrade or TGV delete, I would have to keep going to Cobb for retunes. Which isn't terrible in itself, maybe a little more money spent, but for those that may want to make small changes on the fly, this would be very frustrating.

Oh. Im assuming you have a protune from cobb then? Still though... Locked.... I guess theyre protecting their business but still.. Exactly like you said. Frustrating indeed.

What are you going to do?

Yes, protune. And yes I totally get that they are protecting theirs... just like Apple does.
I'm in no way bashing them I'm just now really starting to see the limitations of tuning via AP from Cobb.
Maybe it's just me feeling like I want to spread my wings a bit but I am feeling a little trapped now and frustrated that I can't do squat with my protuned maps. In essence, it would be like you buying a new Subaru and the engine being locked in a case only accessible by Subaru and its technicians. You are now totally dependent on someone else and only that one someone.

A subject I haven't cared for much and just skimmed over the years, tuning. A process left to those that know and I just nod and say do it.

I have jumped into the rabbit hole and started at square one with Bad Noodles tuning guide. Now it's time to eat and digest and research. Take the principals learned from pushrod engines with carbs and now melding that into a complicated and layered world of computer logic, formulas, principles and theories.
I think I will build a few short blocks and store them in the shed for when I go donkey on this biznatch.

Done. I have had more pleasurable experiences but this wasn't as bad as a lot make it out to be. Definitely time consuming, though but it was hitter than hell today and I did take it slow.

Vacuum is solid. Boost is quicker and comes on harder. Part throttle response is much better. Lagging gears, low rpm, high gears, throttle mash, boost comes on nicely. Turbo is a touch louder through the exhaust and under hood.
Mind you, it's 100* right now but this puppy really sings with a/c cranking and the hot air.

Some say you gain a little power with this but I'm not too convinced of that. However, you do gain some very nice turbo spool and response. A nice supporting mod, it is.
Overall, if your itching to do something and have a couple of bills, I do recommend. Oh, and factory piece is really hot garbage. She will now boost the refuse at the landfill.

Aaaaa... If I can do it so can you. :D Funny you should mention building short blocks. That's almost exactly what I did while I was learning and experimenting with my car. Six blocks later and now I can tune Subaru!

Well, I've got ATR now so I can do it via AP.
I figured some cheapo factory built blocks and drop in pistons to start.
But lotsa learning, first and foremost.
I need to get drunk to garner the nuts to actually do it! Lol
